We recently came across a study comparing principal demographics from 2012 to those from 1988. Here are just a few key findings from the National Center for Education Statistics report. You can download the entire report here.
- Male vs Female: The percentage of female public school principals over the last 25 years has increased from 25 to 52 percent.
- Education Level: More public school principals reported a master’s degree as their highest level of education in 2011–12 compared with 1987–88.
- Salaries: Principals in elementary, secondary, and combined public and private schools earned higher salaries in 2011–12 than in 1987–88, even after adjusting for inflation.
