Meet Hilary Statum
Hilary brings two decades of classroom experience and a passion for literacy to every resource she creates.
A teacher and literacy consultant in middle Tennessee, Hilary has spent 20 years working with students across a variety of grade levels, including pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, transitional 1st grade, 2nd grade, 4th grade, and 5th grade. She has served as a multilingual teacher and a middle school literacy consultant, giving her a broad perspective on supporting learners at every stage of their educational journey.
In addition to her work in schools, Hilary is the published author of Solar System for Kids and Kindergarten Activity Book: Unicorns and is the creator of Pencils to Pigtails, a blog for parents and teachers. She holds a Master’s Degree in Instructional Leadership and enjoys coordinating and teaching her school district’s free English classes for parents. When she’s not working with educators and students, Hilary loves spending time with her husband, three children, parents, siblings, and large extended family.
Her diverse experience as an educator, author, and literacy leader inspire the practical, classroom-focused resources she creates for teachers and students.
We asked Hilary to share her ideas and priorities for creating educational resources.
When you’re creating resources, what do you always keep in mind?
I want students to be engaged and excited about the resources I create. I am always looking for ways to create hands-on experiences, discussion starters, and activities that work well with collaborative learning. I believe every single standard can be taught in an engaging way!
What can teachers expect every time they use one of your resources?
Teachers can trust that the resources I’ve created were made by a classroom teacher who understands what they are looking for.
