Through the generosity of scholarship donors, many students are able to attend college with fewer debts. Most ask for nothing in return, which is why they deserve appreciation and recognition. It takes just a few minutes to express gratitude for this incredible gift, so if you know a student who wins a scholarship, encourage them to make the effort. Not sure where to begin? Here’s a guide you can share on how to write a thank-you letter for scholarship awards.
Tips for Writing a Thank-You Letter for Scholarships
You’ve won a scholarship, and the best thing you can do is acknowledge the source. You don’t need to pen a whole essay, but a well-written note can make someone’s day.
Address the Donor
During the scholarship application process, you’ve been interacting with the selection committee. Now, you should address the actual donor or organization. Usually you can find their name in your award letter. If not, reach out to the selection committee for information.
Even if you’re following an outline, you want your words to show genuine appreciation. Be sincere, mention the scholarship by name (but don’t talk directly about the money), and be thankful.
Explain the Impact
This is your opportunity to tell the donor that they made a difference. Let them know how getting an education has impacted your life and list any awards, accomplishments, or activities that you’d like to share.
Focus on the Future
Give them a glimpse of the future and let them know that they played a role in helping you get there. Share what your plans are following graduation, including any prospective jobs or career goals.
Before closing your letter, take a moment to say thank you one more time. It’s a quick, simple gesture but it shows true gratitude and respect.
Of course, don’t forget to choose a closing greeting and actually sign your name to the letter.
Overall, be concise, clear, and well-organized so that you get your point across without overwhelming the reader. Take some time to proofread and edit your letter before sending it to the donor.

Re: Awesome Students Scholarship
Dear Mrs. Donor,
I’m truly honored to have been chosen for the Future Stars of Tomorrow Scholarship at ABC State for the Fall 2022 semester.
Currently in my freshman year, I’m working hard on my studies and getting used to college life. I’m majoring in French and have really enjoyed my cultural courses. I’ve participated in a few off-campus field trips and have joined the French Club.
I’ve been volunteering at a local organization that helps recent immigrants adjust to their new surroundings. It’s been incredibly rewarding to work with young French-speaking children and their families.
After graduation, I plan to travel abroad and work as an interpreter at an embassy or other local government agency.
The scholarship has allowed me to focus on my studies and give back in a way that is meaningful to the community and to my future career goals. Thank you for the support you provide to students. It has made a difference in my life!
