Ready to take your virtual lessons out of this world? Our friends at Challenger Center let us know about their new virtual space missions. In these virtual sessions, students in grades 5-6 will work together to solve a problem, analyze data, and complete their virtual mission: Destination Mars. What makes this experience really special is that students are guided through by former teacher and NASA astronaut Dorothy Metcalf-Lindenburger.

The Virtual Mission

Students are tasked with completing the virtual space mission: Destination Mars. Their team is ready to explore Mars, but first, they have to decide where their base will go. Student teams will select which moon is best to build a base by analyzing three sets of data collected by rovers on Deimos and Phobos. Then, they analyze their data and make their decision. All in under one hour!

How It Works

  • A Challenger Center Flight Director delivers the entire program from start to finish!
  • Students log in together and are put into small groups.
  • The research process is interactive.
  • Students answer multiple-choice questions, drag and drop to organize information, and look at maps.
  • You see what the students see, but don’t have to do anything other than observe your students in action!

Who it’s for

  • Perfect for remote, hybrid, and socially distanced classrooms.
  • Designed for grades 5-6, and Destination Moon for grades 7-8 is coming soon!
