You’ve got this!

Yellow sticky note on desk with coffee, ben and keyboard that says Be Prepared.

A lot of work goes into becoming a teacher—and then you have to think about certification! The nature of testing can be stressful, so if you’re feeling anxious about taking a Praxis exam, you’re not alone. Fortunately, technology gives us access to plenty of resources we can use to prepare. Taking a Praxis practice test can be extremely beneficial, so we’ve put together this list of free Praxis practice tests to help you get started.

What’s a Praxis Test?

According to The Educational Testing Service, “The Praxis tests measure the knowledge and skills you need to prepare for the classroom. Whether you’re entering a teacher preparation program or seeking your certification, these tests will help you on your journey to becoming a qualified educator.”

Various tests are often required before, during, and after teacher training courses, and passing one is required in order to be hired as a teacher in about half the states in the country, although there are some alternative teacher certification options in some areas.

Tips To Prepare for a Praxis Test

It’s understandable to feel some anxiety and stress when preparing for an exam. We see our students dealing with this stress all the time! Here are a few tips to help you feel more confident and ready for a Praxis test.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

There are many practice Praxis tests out there that you can use to prepare for the real exam. Do your best to re-create actual testing conditions such as setting a time limit and removing all distractions. With regular practice, the process will feel familiar on exam day.

Read the Questions Carefully

We all know there are some tricky questions out there, so don’t hurt your grade by rushing through the test. Take your time, read each question at least twice, but don’t overthink it. Just remember what you’ve learned and trust your gut.

Budget Your Time

Before you get started, confirm the number of questions and then set a limit for how long you’ll spend on each one. If you have 15 questions and 30 minutes to answer all of them, then you can’t spend more than two minutes answering them.

The First Questions Are Crucial

Praxis tests are computer adaptive, which means that if you get the first few questions right, the following questions get more difficult. This will allow you to earn a higher score. As such, you’ll want to be particularly careful with the first few responses since they will have a greater initial impact.

Have a Positive Attitude …

The only thing you can do is prepare well for a Praxis exam. Everything beyond that is outside of your control. So, do your best to get ready, and then think positively. If you start to feel stressed, take some deep breaths. You could even meditate or visualize yourself receiving a high score on the test! Just do your best to stay calm and confident.

… But Know the Tricks

If you’ve ever taken a Praxis test, or any exam really, you know that there are some things to anticipate. Tricky questions can include the following:

  • Absolutes: If the response has words like never, always, greatest, or worst, it’s probably wrong.
  • Except: If the question uses “except” or “which of the following is NOT true,” slow down and read especially carefully.

Check out this test-taking strategies guide. It’s helpful for adults as well as kids.

At the end of the day, you can only do so much, so try not to stress. Take everything at face value and trust all of your preparation and skill. You’ve got this!
