Teach Your Students Simple Money Planning With This Lesson and Activity Sheet

What can we do with money? It’s an important question for K-2 students (and one that they’re inherently motivated to find out the answer to). Spending, saving, and giving are central concepts when it comes to money management. Give your students a head start with this “Money Planning” lesson. It’s all part of our Adventures in Math resource center!

What’s in the “Money Planning” lesson?

This lesson is divided into four parts:

Part 1—Spending Money: Make a “wants vs. needs” list as a class.

Part 2—Saving Money: A special story helps kids understand why it’s important to keep their money in a special place. The “Don’t Lose Your Money” worksheet has them identify good places to keep money.

Part 3—Giving Money: In small groups, students brainstorm how to use $10 to help others.

Part 4—Spending, Saving, and Giving: Construct a pictograph using three different colors of sticky notes.

Standards

• Develop an understanding of personal financial literacy, including income, interest, wants and needs, saving and spending, and charitable giving.
