Basic number sense is something you hit hard in the lower grades. It’s really important, but it can be hard for little kids. This week, I’ve created a worksheet that hopefully looks happy enough that your students will feel a little bit better about all the practicing they’ve got to do.

Here’s how it works: choose a number and write it at the top of the page before you make copies for your class. (The younger the students, the easier the number should be to work with.  I’ve intentionally left this part blank so you can use the sheet over and over again and adjust the level of difficulty to fit your class. I also made two versions with different characters, just to keep things interesting.) Then have your kids follow the directions by each character and write the answer in the balloons. For example, if you choose the number 5 for your class, and the text next to the character says “double the number,” the students should write 10 in the balloon.

Then have a little class chat about the number (a.k.a. go over the answers)! If you really wanted to go nuts, you could assign a range of numbers to a color (for example, any balloon with a number between-5 should be colored red) or choose odd/evens to be colored a certain color.  Happy number chatting!
