December 6, 1884:
The Washington Monument in Washington D.C. was completed.

The monument is made of nearly 36,000 blocks of marble and granite and is 555 feet in height. It was the tallest structure in the world at the time of its completion! For more: Watch this video about why the Washington Monument was built.
