Next Steps
Benefits of Sports Participation
Girls who participate in sports benefit in many ways. Studies have shown that benefits of sport participation include:
• Better life-long health
• More developed social skills
• Better time management
• Better grades
• Less risk of early pregnancy, smoking, or drug use
• Less risk of diseases such as osteoporosis and heart disease
• Better leadership development skills
Participating in sports is FUN, but it also helps you meet new friends, learn to interact successfully with others, set goals for yourself, develop confidence, and be more fit and active. Whether you are on a school team, a club team, or simply work out on your own, including sports/active living in your day is important!
To this end, NAGWS has created
Your Next Steps
- a web resource available by subscription for female student-athletes in Junior High, High School and College. A private debut of this exciting program was offered at the AAHPERD Convention in April. Its public debut is slated for late summer 2008
Mary Jennings Camp Scholarship
The Mary Jennings Sport Camp Scholarship Fund
, established by The National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) in early 2007, helps support young female athletes who would like to attend a sport camp to develop their skills.
All girls ages 10-14 who are interested in attending a sport camp of their choice can apply for funds to be applied to the tuition for the camp. Scholarship funds cannot be applied to transportation, equipment or supplies. More
details
are available online at the NAGWS website.
The Fund is named for NJ athlete Mary Jennings who passed away in June of 2006 following a short battle with liver cancer. Jennings, 21, was a multi-talented student-athlete who played soccer, basketball and ran track, but her passion was soccer.
