Welcome!

Welcome from Ann. Are you on a journey? Join me!
As many of my "aging comrades" know, sometimes in life you reach a point where there is a true epiphany.  Things that were so important, aren't. Things that aren't so important are.  And then there are the things that just happen along and are met by the serendipity of the moment -- forces meet, timing works, your mind clears and there it is.  I have had that time several times in my life but never like the last year where I found myself in a convergence of Life, Love, Death and Social and Political issues all screaming to be heard at the same time.  It happened many months ago.  I had a chance to focus on the time between now and the whenever.  I set some goals.  In my past,  I had opportunities that had presented themselves, I did not act and then they were gone.  I had opportunities that presented themselves and I seized them.  I had always tried to live my life like:

"You got to sing like you don't need the money;
Love, like you'll never get hurt;
You got to dance like nobody's watchin'.
It's gotta come from the heart , If you want it to work. "

Turned out pretty good.  I have had a diverse, rewarding,  interesting and at times, random encounters "of a third kind".

However with the epiphany, I determined that I would:

LIve life with extreme passion
Laugh often and spread that laughter to others
and Love Deeply

As one of my first "adventures" to achieve my goals.  I traded my Lexus for a Mazda CX 9.  It is the "girls car".  It hauls my daughter and two grandchildren from Ft. Worth to Clyde and back -- in comfort and with a smaller "environmental footprint".  They are the joys of my life -- and children throughout the world are our future.

Scott, my 33 year old son, and his patner Allen moved to Connecticut.  My sister-in-law and I loaded a Uhaul, installed a towing package and headed out.  1835 miles there and 1835 miles back.  We also did, Little Rock, Nashville, Gettysburg (53,000 men killed in a 3 day battle that pitted families against families, brothers against brothers),  Washington D. C., New York, shows, Staten Island.  We walked every path in Arlington National Cemetery, Lee Mansion. We stood at midnight at the Memorials for Jefferson, Lincoln, and the new World War II memorial.

I came home to an election that I was as passionate and determined to work as hard as I could for Change.  I did outbound calling, reaching out to neighbors in Clyde, Texas and "battle ground states".  I had a serendipity opportunity to go on a bus trip to Ohio (battleground) and I blogged about the trip.  I am including that narrative for those of you who may want to read more.  Wherever you stand politically, it was an experience of a lifetime.

I am working to organize focus groups, educational reform groups, student and parent advocacy groups --- someone to articulate and fight for the kids whose parents don't know how or can't take the time to address change of a failed educational system in this country.  I have started other successful businesses -- but this could be fun.  I have interests in the planet, civil rights, environment and the war.  I have joined human rights organizations to better disadvantaged people and children throughout the world with my time, advocacy and passion.   Do you have an interest in belonging to a band of brothers?  Your colors may run a different color than mine but we know that diverse and disparate groups can achieve unbelievable accomplishments.  (My brothers and family are firmly convinced that I am totally and completely crazy!  But then what is new -- maybe it is just the degree.

Why do I address this right now?  This week my best friend in high school died.  FSB and I were best friends for 12 years in Clyde Public Schools.  Though our association over the last "40" years has been very limited, the memories of those twelve years together are many.  And hearing of her death,  hit me like a brick wall.  Time does not diminish those memories but may make them more special when you realize they do not occur every day.  I may have a long life-time to fulfill my dreams to better our world and country for my grandchildren.  Or I have weeks, months or a year.  Who knows? I don't.  But one thing that I know for sure: I will live my life a little differently.  There will be time to speak out for a child that is not receiving the education he needs, I will be an advocate.  There will be time to assist a father of 3 struggling to recover from Katrina and relocation - helping him fulfill the promise that was planted by his grandmother who taught him fairness, hard work, and responsibility.

I will find a way to give back to a world and country that has given me much the future that all children deserve.  I will challenge everyone I know to do the same.  I will mentor them in ways to achieve the "give back".  Because everyone can -- and most importantly, because, everyone should.  Our time here is too short to be a "place holder".  We must move from place holders to change agents.

If you feel that you are one, you would like to do "something", you want to place a focus with your ideas for change, join me.  I don't know all the steps of where this will take me, but I do know that together we can achieve a lot.  We can make a difference.  We can leave this planet a little better than we found it.

I hope that all of you dig deep in your inner conscience -- see what is there and what is missing.  Remember your special friends now gone and so many others  and their time that came too quickly -- and decide that now is when you can move forward in a new and purposeful direction.  Drop me a line or give me a call.

The best of wishes to you and your families for a Happy Holiday.

The journey moves from one to many.....
Tags: advocacy groups, apathy, clyde high school, education reform, national teacher of the year, obama, student advocacy

These last few days have been such an interesting time!  From my original posting I have received many messages from my Clyde High School Ex's that all want to "join" together to make a difference.  My initial interest has been in education reform, student advocacy, parental avocacy and assistance and social reforms.  My original blog chronicals a bus trip I took to Ohio with 50 new friends.  It was the time of my life! That began a desire to do more, so my next blog evolved from the death of one of my best friends in high school.  You can read both of these by reading my profile in WAT and following the link back to my Obama blog.  Yesterday, I had a high school friend email to repond to my blog that has lost 4 family members with the span of a year. Rather than pitying herself, she was moved to want to do more.  Her expertise is in Math and was the National Teacher of the Year about 12 or 15 years ago.  She will be joining WAT soon.  She has a real concern regarding student and parent apathy. Today another high school friend contacted me wanting to join to address youth that she sees turning to drugs.  So the train is leaving the station.  You will soon see advocacy groups begin to spring up comprised of group of caring people wanting to make a difference.  For now this group will begin by sharing expertise, ideas and diverse backgrounds and establishing a few common goals.  We are not sure how we will do it -- but we are getting ready to begin!
