A few years ago I had to get a pacemaker to help my heart function better. Since then I have learned about ways to be heart smart. I try to eat healthier including more fruits and vegetables.
As a life long learner and teacher, I want to set a good example for my students, so they will have healthy hearts too. I would like to purchase 2 AeroGrow indoor garden units. Students would observe, measure and record growth of plants using Flip and digital cameras and thier science journals.
From this project students should learn or experience the following:
1. the steps in the life cycle process
2. explain how fruits and vegetables are beneficial
3. combine information from various sources to draw conclusions.
4. use a variety of methods and materials to observe,measure, and accurately record data
5. integrate technology using scientific inquiry methods
6. learn how to work together in cooperative groups
I hope this lesson will inspire them to become heart healthy too.

science journals, digital cameras, Flip camcorder,
measurement tools, Lima/Red beans,paper towels, plastic cups, vegetable seeds,magnifying glasses,posters, potting soil,disposable gloves,Science text book and related materials
All activities would be aligned with current benchmarks and content standards for science, ELA, and technolgy. The culminating event would be a \"salad fest\" using vegetables grown from the indoor garden. Each student would be given a small vegetable plant to take home. Students would create a powerpoint presentation to be placed in the school library, as well as create a copy to take home.ELA components include written compositions on nutrition and healthy food choices.
