I am the CSF Advisor and Home Ec. teacher.Every year the Sat. before Thanksgiving, I spend 8 hours here at school with about 100 students making 250 pies.We then give these to a homeless shelter. We make pumpkin and different fruit pies. The lab is great for the students because they learn the basics of pie crust and pie baking, measuring and reading a recipe, but it is also a terrific opportunity for them to \"give back\"
The students of course learn the recipe, measuring and baking skills needed to prepare the pies, but they also learn about caring for others. Many of the students come from wealthy homes and do not have any contact with homeless people or those less fortunate. This is a real eyeopener for them. They love doing it, and I love seeing their reactions and the joy and sense of accomplishment they feel after we have boxed up and delivered all those pies.
We use all of my classroom utensils and then the food ingredients needed and boxes for the pie making.
This is one of the best labs that I do. During class time we make all sorts of foods throughout the year, but this is my favorite lab to do. The kids really get a lot out of it and remember it year after year.
