Five Tips for Managing Learning in a Tech-Centered Classroom

New technology has a way of drawing students into learning in a way that's both efficient and effective—but it also can be a disruption from the norm in a classroom.   One of the biggest fears of many teachers is that as they integrate technology into their lessons—especially hands-on technology like Tablet PCs or cell phones—the technology will become a distraction for students and teachers.  But it doesn’t have to be that way!  Here are five simple ways to keep your students on-task and your lessons on time as you integrate more and more technology into your lessons.

  1. Set some ground rules.  Just like every other aspect of teaching, by giving your students clear expectations on technology use, you'll avoid distraction and keep your students on-task.
  2. Create a "Screens Down" Cue.  Come up with a cue—whether it's a certain word or you ringing a bell—that means all students need to immediately stop what they're doing and put their screens facing down on their desks.
  3. Give students specific end goals.  It's easy to wander with technology—so by giving your students specific, tangible goals or tasks—instead of just allowing them to fiddle with a particular program or app, you'll give them the tools they need to learn with that technology.
  4. Focus on teamwork. By structuring your lessons so that your students can work in teams to learn the content, they'll be able to coach each other through learning the technology and will be more likely to stay on task.
  5. Use technology that's easy to set up.  The last thing you want to do is spend 30 minutes getting your technology booted while a classroom of students waits.  So, look for technology that takes less than 5 minutes to boot up so you can get teaching fast.  (Want ideas?  An HP Pocket Whiteboard will allow you to make any surface interactive in seconds, and the HP Companion Projector is so small and portable (smaller than a coffee cup) that you can bring it anywhere and set it up in minutes.)

(Pssst!  Educators, students and parents can get deep discounts on HP technology through HP Academy!  Click here to learn how much you can save on the technology listed in this article and more.)

Question for you:  How do you use technology to keep pace with the speed of learning in your classroom?

I like the idea of a screens down rule. It creates a real boundary for the classroom.

Despite everything that makes it look real, there may be SOME way in which it could be fake. I just got the same email (different name, etc., of cosure), but I don't HAVE a Facebook account. I haven't tried clicking the links, since I don't use Facebook so there wouldn't be any point.

Yes, happens on iPhones, too … but not on all. Can’t tell why it happens some times and some times not.In my case it was even more weired. I am using two different traveler accounts (one using the profile, the other manually installed). After the upgrade I got a pop-up asking me for the password. This one came obviously from the account that was created with the profile. The other account refused to work until I went back to settings and typed in the password there again. The pw-field seemd to be empty (no dots in the field). After entering the password everything worked fine again. In a previous update I had the password problem with Traveler Companion. With this update Companion wasn’t affected.

I simply can’t imagine why a hosting company would do this intentionally! I take it that you are aware that the DNS info is held by the company you registered your domain with – DNS in its simplest explanation tells your domain registrar where to find your hosting company.Could you clarify that you bought your domain name AND hosting from the same company? If you are unable to login to your Control Panel that is an issue unto itself and would explain why you can’t do anything! That’s the issue you should address! Is it a lost password problem?Sounds like you are with a crappy hosting company either way but I would focus on accessing your Control Panel first – everything else can be fixed once you’ve done that. And yes threaten them with legal action if they do not help you access your CP!

Hazel thanks for your note. (LOVE The Sartorialist!!). All black is often the default colour because it’s the easier to unify (imagine an ensemble full of slightly different shades of red), it’s easy on the eyes, and the audience tends to focus more on the music than if the ensemble were wearing different colours. The problem with saying go for it, wear any colour is what one person considers stylish another will consider completely inappropriate. There there’s the issue of colour clashing. And in classical music, there are known stereotypes about what kind of dress is associated with certain types of music. Opera performers (and audiences) tend to go all out with style and flamboyance; Baroque performers (and audiences) tend not to consider fashion a big deal and are very low-key with their apparel. Ultimately, no, I don’t think ensembles should be able to wear any colour; then it looks like a rehearsal.
